We want to thank you for attending the Inaugural Conference of ASHE. The success of this conference was largely due to the enthusiasm and support of members. The papers were uniformly of high quality and the discussions were lively. We had about 530 attendees and we have received very positive comments from many of you. However, we want to continue to improve. We would appreciate your thoughts about the strengths and weaknesses of the conference and we are seeking suggestions. Please provide your feedback on the short questionnaire. Your input is greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

John Mullahy, Local Organizing Committee
Dick Arnould, Executive Director
The Madison Conference Opening Reception at the Monona Terrace in downtown Madison will be starting at 5pm on Sunday, June 4, rather than 6pm as previously scheduled. The reception will end at 6:30pm.
All presenters should have received invitations to the Online Presentation Submission system.
If you haven’t yet (it might have been accidentally flagged as spam, for example), please contact us at conference@healtheconomics.us. Remember that the deadline for submitting your Presentation is 11:00 PM of the night before your presentation. If you can’t submit online, you should come to the registration desk during registration hours the day before your presentation. You can bring a USB flash drive or CD-R.
If you have any concerns, please contact Patrick Taylor at conference@healtheconomics.us.
Graduate students attending the upcoming ASHE conference are invited to join us at a student outing after the reception at Monona Terrace on Sunday, June 4th. It will be an opportunity for student attendees and some of their student hosts (from the University of Wisconsin) to meet in a relaxed informal setting.
For coordination purposes we will plan to rendezvous at the Essen Haus/Come Back In at 7:00 PM. The Essen Haus is a favorite of local grad students and features an authentic Wisconsin atmosphere as well as plenty of seating to accommodate the group.
To get to the Essen Haus, simply walk from Monona Terrace back towards the Capitol until you encounter Wilson Street (should be the first major street). Take a right on Wilson Street and walk 4 blocks (about 0.3 miles) and you’ll find the Essen Haus at the northeast corner of Wilson and Franklin.

Deadline. The deadline is April 1 at 5:00 pm ET. Submissions must be sent electronically to Bill Swan (bill@healtheconomics.org).
Description. The ASHE Student Paper Award honors the student who wrote the best sole-authored paper.
Eligibility. Applicants must be current Ph.D. students or have received their Ph.D. from a North American institution after July 1, 2004. The paper must be sole authored. The paper must either be accepted for presentation at the ASHE conference or be published (or forthcoming) in a peer-reviewed journal. As a condition of receiving this honor, the recipient must attend the ASHE conference.
Criteria. The Awards Committee will select the paper that makes the greatest contribution to health economics. The paper’s contributions may be theoretical, empirical, or methodological.
Materials. A complete submission will include both the paper and a nominating letter from the student’s advisor. Unpublished submissions should be similar in length and style to an article that might be published in a leading economics journal. Full dissertations will not be accepted.
Judging. The judging will be done in two stages. The chair of the Awards Committee will randomly assign each submitted paper to at least two committee members for an initial review. Based on the initial reviews, a final set of about three papers will be reviewed by the entire committee. The reviews will be blinded (only the committee chair will see the nominating letters). In the event of a conflict of interest, a new committee member will replace the member with the conflict. The replacement will be named by the committee chair, or in the event of the committee chair having a conflict, by a committee member selected by the chair.
